Default Any words of advice are welcome...

I've been MIA a lot lately due to work issues. We hired a new technician, that in a word is ...useless. He is immature and is just not up to the task. He moved here from another state to take this job and I feel bad about letting him go, but I don't have a choice. He makes jokes about knowing what car I drive and knowing where I live, should I be worried about retaliation? We haven't termed him yet, but it's coming and I'll be the one to do it. Not fun! Dealing with this has physically made me ill. I ended up at the neuro last week with an IV full of meds to stop a migraine that has lasted 2 weeks, I can't eat and my usual IBS with constipation is now IBS with diarrhea. UGH! Anyone else with experience with hiring/firing??

Not exactly. Other than DB always getting fired.

Do you think he is joking or semi-serious about his comments? Just the fact he is making them is worrisome. If you think he might be serious, talk to someone higher up about it. Maybe even report it to the police and ask for some extra drive bys in your neighborhood for a couple weeks after you let him go. Just to be safe.

When you do let him go - because of his behavior, I would not give him warning and send him home immediately. You do NOT want to give him a chance to mess anything up. He might find it amusing to change a prescription that could then kill someone.

People we have worked with and kind of let go have been messy, but they didn't live anywhere near us. I wasn't the one giving the killing blow though. We tried to keep working with some on a different basis, but they were not interested. That's not an option for you anyway.

I would be sure to explain to him WHY you are letting him go. So that "hopefully" he matures a bit and does better at his next job. I would explain to him the problems before telling him he is fired, because after you say bye bye he won't be listening.

My one question is - have you talked to him about his unacceptable behavior yet? So that he has had a chance to change his behavior? It's extremely annoying to be fired and not know what you did wrong that got you fired. And had it been something you could have changed had you known what needed fixing, it's even more annoying.

It's certainly never fun to have to let someone go, no matter the circumstance.

Do you have an HR department you can turn to for advice on how to approach it. Every situation is different, so, it's hard to give exact advice. But, if there was an improvement plan that was done and he has not improved as indicated, I would tell him at the end of his shift. Sit him down and explain what was expected and that unfortunately, the company is having to let him go.

Is there a boss above you that can also be present during the firing? (only because of your concerns regarding retaliation).

Looks like you got some good advice. I hope you can fire him easily as possible and rid all the stress from you.

Holy crap woman! How come this is the first I've heard about you being hooked up to an IV for a migraine????? I'm so sorry sweetie!!

Now, onto this psycho 'stalker' guy... I for you that the firing goes smoothly. I agree with Rebecca... definitely explain clearly WHY he's being "let go" and then send him home immediately!

Keeping my it goes well.

He has been coached, both during work and at a meeting I had with him the week before last. I counseled him on his tardiness and then he was late the very next day. He knows I'm not happy...TRUST me. The comments eased up some, but then he pulls youtube up on the work computer to show me some stupid 'jackass' type stuff his friend did. Uh, HELLO, not ok! I guess either you have common sense or you don't. He doesn't. I've been in contact with HR and our district manager about him at length. They can term him just based on his tardiness and because he is still in his first 90 days.
