Default Dr. ?

I have a list of OB's that are in my area. Someone brilliant (you know who you are ) told me I should ask them questions to see which one that I like but I have no idea what to ask Any ideas?

I would ask them what their policy is when you find out your PG?

How often do you get to see the dr, or do you have to see a nurse Practictioner?

Hum lets see. There has to be someone else out there who has gotten a new dr. How did you choose them??

When I found my ob, I went to the nurse Practioner for a yearly and then when I was PG they asked if I had a dr. I didn't and of course they recommended the dr they worked for. but I really liked her so it all worked out.

Thanks, Tricia. Those are good ideas. I think part of them problem is I don't know what I want out of a dr. As long as he or she is nice, dosen't do anything super crazy, and lets me have an epidural, I think I would be mostly happy.

Here are some sites with questions to ask a prospective care giver:

http://www.motherfriendly.org/Ten_Qu...questions.html

http://www.childbirthconnection.org/...e.asp?ck=10158

If you are healthy and low risk - do not forget to consider a midwife vs a doctor for your care provider. MANY women are much happier with midwives vs doctors.

There are different kinds of midwives. But if you are planning a hospital birth, you would probably have a CNM (Certified Nurse Midwife). She can prescribe medications if needed just like a doctor can. For a complication free pregnancy - she will do pretty much the same thing as a doctor, except she will probably spend more time with you at pre-natels than a doctor would. They also try to encourage you to have a more natural child birth - but in a hospital setting there is still the option for pain meds if you want them. Doctors can do c-sections and would be the one you would transfer care to if complications were to arise. Keep in mind that midwives can deal with most of the normal problems that arise during pregnancy.

Midwives tend to empower the mother. And doctors tend to just tell you what to do because they know best. (simplified - obviously each care provider varies)

Another perspective to take - my gynecologist (who is an OB as well) had her children with a midwife. About 50% of the babies born in the hospital I went to are born with a midwife in attendance.

Now if your a more radical person like myself you could consider a home birth or a birth center. You could still end up with a CNM who can prescribe medication, but you could also find a CPM (Certified Practicing Midwife) or lay midwife. These other midwives can not prescribe medications - though they do carry the basic meds to stop bleeding after child birth and the Rogam shot for Rh- mothers. No epidurals though if you go birth center or home birth. At a birth center you MIGHT be able to get some pain meds. But they focus on other forms of pain management than drugs.
