How do you wind them down before bed? We used to give him a snack, and let him watch Thomas, but now that's not even working. He still gets a snack(Dh ALWAYS gives him cookies ) I usually go for cheese and crackers, or cereal. Then he gets a bath. Last night we put him down around 8:30, and when DH went in to check on him at 10, he was still awake in his bed, sitting up. He came out and asked to sleep in our bed, and we told him no. He finally went to sleep, but couldn't get up this morning for school. Tonight he watched Frosty, has chocolate teddy grahms, and then a bath. I read him a story, and then told him he could look at his books for 10 minutes before i turned out the lights. He came out and told us night night, and we turned off the light. I can still hear him up in there. I just don't understand...any sugestions?
"Mom, put Ty back in your belly ~ he keeps touching my toys"
Maybe it is a phase for these little people....Jake has been the same. ALthough he is super excited about Christmas. Remember when they are little and are learning a new task they would sleep less...maybe they are learning something new. Who knows! I think your routine sounds good.

We usually do baths around 7:30, read a book around 8, sing a couple of songs (her favs are twinkle, twinkle and itsy, bitsy spider), say goodnight and leave the room. She sleeps with the closet light on. Sometimes we can hear her in there singing or talking for an hour or more before she finally goes to sleep. As long as she stays in bed that's ok with us. Thomas will look at books for a while after we read one and say goodnight. He has a book light above his bed that he turns on/off. We don't let them have any food after baths and teeth are brushed. I think they are really excited about the holiday and that's part of it.
Mine still nurses to sleep, so if she's tired, that pretty much knocks her out. Otherwise what you do - bath and book.
I would avoid any caffeine - which includes chocolate - a few hours before bed time. That can make it hard for some kids (and adults) to get to sleep. I actually think (and have also read) that TV before bedtime actually has the opposite desired effect. I know if I let her watch TV in the middle of the night when she wakes up - it takes 2-4 times longer for her to go back to sleep than if I just let her color, play quietly or look at books.

I heard the same thing. Also, the change in temp from warm bath to cool bed does something to the body and makes you sleepy. A professor talked to us about it at school. I don't remember anything else about the topic though. Ya know I took the exam, so it's no longer within reach in my brain
Routine helps a lot. We do a bath, brush teeth, sing songs, story routine. Same as Emma we don't allow any food or drink after the teeth has been brushed. And there are times when I hear him talking and singing to himself for about an hour but I don't worry about it. As long as his not crying I just let him talk away.
We have pretty much the same thing here. Carter goes to bed and will sit in there for up to 2 hours singing and playing with himself. He must get that from his daddy because Lord knows I'm not entertained that easily.
We don't worry about it unless he's crying, which is very rare.
