It's rather scary the number of states that still allow their teachers to use paddles on their students. Mine does not, which I knew some time ago because DB's father use to teach and was annoyed he couldn't use a paddle anymore. He use to use it quite a bit I've heard. But then, I think he enjoyed using it on students - particularly considering how he use to always beat-up DB when he was growing up.
More than 200,000 kids spanked at school - CNN.com School spankings: Minorities get more - Education - MSNBC.com Someone else found this on a google search: Where the states stand on corporal punishment: Alabama--Legal Alaska--Illegal Arizona--Legal Arkansas--Legal California--Illegal Colorado--Legal Connecticut--Illegal Delaware--Illegal District of Columbia--N/A Florida--Legal Georgia--Legal Hawaii--Illegal Idaho--Legal Illinois--Illegal Indiana--Legal Iowa--Illegal Kansas--Legal Kentucky--Legal Louisiana--Legal Maine--Illegal Maryland--Illegal Massachusetts--Illegal Michigan--Illegal Minnesota--Illegal Mississippi--Legal Missouri--Legal Montana--Illegal Nebraska--Illegal Nevada--Illegal New Hampshire--Illegal New Jersey--Illegal New Mexico--Legal New York--Illegal North Carolina--Legal North Dakota--Illegal Ohio--Legal Oklahoma--Legal Oregon--Illegal Pennsylvania--Legal Rhode Island--Restricted* South Carolina--Legal South Dakota--Illegal Tennessee--Legal Texas--Legal Utah--Illegal Vermont--Illegal Virginia--Illegal Washington--Illegal West Virginia--Illegal Wisconsin--Illegal Wyoming--Legal * banned by every school board in the state I had assumed until yesterday it was illegal in all public schools. Silly me for assuming such a thing. Last edited by Koloe; 08-21-2008 at 04:20 PM. |

That says that it is legal here in South Carolina..but its not. I believe a couple years ago actually a teacher tried to spank a student and she lost her license to teach and was put in jail. Even in the school handbooks it says that parents have to give permission for the Principal to give spankings..but nothing about teachers. Either way Im against it...hell if I can't even spank my own child out in public without going to jail why on earth am I going to give that permission to someone else?!!?

I think there may be a lot of school districts in states where it is "legal" that don't allow it. But someone on another board had just signed an opt-out for her child at a new school - saying she did NOT want her child spanked as a form of discipline.

Here it is legal BUT parents have the right to opt-out. Honestly, I don't think that it is something that schools use very often. I know that the schools here will call if they feel that spanking is the punishment of choice and the parents are given the chance to do it themselves.
I didn't realze it was such a "hot button". |

Any kind of corporal punishment you can pretty much consider "hot button" depending on the group of people you are talking too. In one article I read - I don't think it's one of the links I posted though - a 5-year-old landed in the ER because of the beating his teacher gave him for not being polite enough.
One could get into a very heated argument over appropriate and inappropriate punishment of children. Note - the list is supposedly from 2002 so not 100% accurate I've just discovered. Last edited by Koloe; 08-21-2008 at 05:58 PM. |

I can't believe it is still an option in some schools, though some kids probably NEED spanking. |
