Today was the last day of school. I attended the awards ceremony... and once again, Joshua won a "math nerd" award... and a reading award given by the University of Kansas. He was not happy, however.
Last year he was the overall winner of the district wide math competition. This year, he won a medal for being in the top 20% of the school district (43 elementary schools) but wasn't the "overall" high scorer. He was soooo disappointed. The high score in his class was 39.... he scored a 36. The high score for the other 4th grade class was 36. I so wish he'd not found that out. He's so hard on himself when he's not "the best." I hope he grows out of it. We are very proud of him.... just the same! So, 5th grade.... here we come!!! =) Josh also received an invitation to join the "honors orchestra" next year. He'll practice at 7 AM at the middle school, once a week... and they'll bus him to his elementary school. So, between private music lessons and football practices for him, and dance for Brenna... and my classes at school... we'll... it's going to be a busy year next year!!! =) |

It's not about being the best, it's about being the best YOU can be. I'm sure you've told him this though. Besides, the kid who did the best might have just gotten some lucky guesses. When I took the ACT the sciene section had a ton of question on physics, which I had not taken and there were just to many questions for me to answer in the amount of time given. So with only a little bit of time left, I just filled in the circles and ended up with a score of 30 (out of what 36???) when I just randomly filled in half the section. So numbers don't always mean any thing.

Tell that to my math whiz kid!!! LOL!
The Pentathlon is actually 8 weeks of intensive math problems... 5 given each week. It's incredibly difficult - and that's why it's "district wide." I keep reminding him that 80% of the kids in the entire DISTRICT didn't score as well as he did. On another note...... He brought home all results from standardized and MAP testing today. He experienced a 17% growth in math, and a 16% growth in reading. His scores placed him in the 94th percentile in Math... and the 97th percentile for reading... in the entire country!!!! The same testing, in 3rd grade, placed him in the 73rd percentile for each. I'm constantly amazed by his academic achievements. =) I can't even BEGIN to tell you how proud I am. |
