i am hoping he will take to something chunkier. When should i try something like the arrowroot cookies or the harder items that he can gnaw but that arent to small that he might swallow? I am also trying to get him to take a few ounces of water or watered down apple juice but he doesnt want it. All he wants is cereal mixed with a little baby food and milk.
I gave Liriel Cheerios pretty early on, though I'm not sure if it was quite as young as yours. I think the advantage of Cheerios is that they have the hole in the middle, so even if they do go down wrong, you have time to get it out as the hole allows air flow through, and thus less like to have a dangerous choking incident.
But the mesh bag thing - as you discribed it - is a good way to start with solids too.
How about fruit puffs...those are easy to pick up and they mush up pretty well so they dont really need to chew them.....i also agree about the mesh feeder they are great....I also made my own biscuits for her out of baby cereal and milk...there is a recipe on the board here somewhere for the ones I made...ill have to search for it and repost it.
"Mom, put Ty back in your belly ~ he keeps touching my toys"
Ty has no teeth and is about the same age as Shannon. We do cheerios and have for a while with no problem. I do Stage 2s and some 3s also with no problem and a lot of table food-whatever he can grab from his brother's plate-which has included cheetos and sandwiches, oh and pop tarts. As an OT I know that thicker foods are easier to manipulate and get used to moving to the back of the mouth and swallowing so they are okay, the reason you start with thinner foods is they slide down but as they get older you want them to learn to move the food back in their mouth-make sense?
The mesh food feeder is great.
As far as biscuits, I really like gerber's biter biscuits and I do plain graham crackers and we have not had an issue. I have however had issues with the arrowroot cookies and they get goopy and the mush got stuck and Ty got choked and I have trouble clearing it because it was so goopy.

i guess my biggest fear is him choking on something. I use to run the vol. rescue squad and i saw it so much with other kids... again paranoid mom syndrome. i think i will try out the mesh feeder first and go from there. I cant wait to try out the table food with him. Better tasting anyway.

The mesh feeder is great...try starting out with frozen grapes, bananas, melons. I even did chicken and potatoes and veggies in there as well.
