I think she hit the nail on the head! She told me that his lips didn't have enough muscle in them to nurse, and that he dosen't purse his lips out when he sucks, so he's getting a bad latch, and not enough milk(could be the cause of the poop issues too....) She said his tounge lays flat, and dosen't curl. She gave me some exercises to do with him to try and strengthin the lip muscles. I have tried twice today, and he won't have it.
She thinks that the reason he has to always have something in his mouth, is due to a non-autistic sensory issue. I don't know how much of that i agree with....she also said he was teething.....I will give it another day or 2 before i call her. She told me if he wouldn't let me do the exercises, to call her and we'll try something else. He was NOT having her touch him or hold him or do the exercises. She had to show me on me.
Mike was SUCH a good boy at the apt. Tony came with me, but she had sooo many toys, they were BOTH in heaven!

It's far too early for anyone to determine ANYTHING with regards to autism or non-autism. So, I'm curious as to why those words were even mentioned. Did she give you any special "tools" to use? Joshua has oral motor issues, when he was little we had to do exercises with a little toothbrush like tool. It helped him learn to curl his tongue, as well as stimulate the insides of his cheeks to condition his muscles.
I hope the exercises help! It sounds like you are on the right track. =)

I saw I missed your call today so i will try to call you tomorrow....but I think there are many things you can try. I just showed a friend of mine some to do with her soon. You can try simple things like the finger toothbrush to work on some sensory stuff and like what kind of teethers do you guys have? I know that discovery toys has that vanilla scented one I like and you can use those mesh feeder bags to have him tryt o chew on stuff-even if it is just ice or frozen breastmilk. Interesting though that a lot of these issues seem new right? HMMMM....I wouldn't give up on nursing just yet...there are some things you can try to do before you nurse too that might help if he is orally defensive. I think I will just call you....I aam glad you had a good visit with her though.
