Dean was diagnosed with silent reflux this morning. The Dr wants to try Zantac, and if that dosne't help in 2 weeks, we need to follow up with an upper GI.
I just gave him a dose of the Zantac, and he was almost chokeing on it...it's very minty. Anyone have any sugestions? How long before i should see a difference? |

yep it is terrible for flavor...you can try to flavor it but it didnt help much for kate....it is really too overpowering.....as far as helping it took about a good week or so to see some improvement but the dr warned me it can take up to 2 weeks.

Because I said so, that's why!

I don't know much about reflux, other than try to keep him upright as much as possible. I know some people prop crib mattresses up so the baby is sleeping at an angle instead of flat on his back. And the bouncy seats and swings help many people - but you said those didn't work for him. If you could figure out how to get the sling to work for you, that might help as well. I saw a 5 week old baby (looked like a newborn though) who was having similar problems and when we showed the mother how to use the sling, the 2nd position we put him in made him very content. He didn't like the first position.

Working Hard Keeping the Hussy's In Line

The problem with reflux is that there really isn't anything the doctors can do about stopping the spitting up, the meds are just to control the pain that the babies feel while refluxing. Things are supposed to get a little better when they start solids. (Or, so I’ve heard).
I noticed a difference within a week with Austin. He stopped crying so bad after/while spitting up. He just seemed very calm. We also had to do a GI (although, I opted to wait until he was older so that it was easier to wait the four hours). We did Austin’s at about 10 weeks old. We scheduled it for 10am. I would however, have liked it better to schedule it first thing in the AM when they are hungry and not so ‘awake’ and opt to screaming. I would definitely get there early so that you can fill out all the paperwork and get to the GI waiting area. The waiting area was PACKED for both when I went, and I was afraid that Austin would have a screaming fit. Instead, he was good and God was on my side that day because he ended up sleeping while waiting. The test is really cool. You get to see the fluid going down his throat and into his stomach. It’s really neat to watch on the screen. The doc will come in and tell you right then if he has reflux or not. I was feeding Austin a bottle at this point because I was having to supplement with formula due to supply issues, so, I would just load up the syringe with the Zantac, and put his bottle in his mouth and then put the syringe in on the side and gently squirt in the Zantac every now and then until the syringe was empty. This was easier than having him gag at the taste of the Zantac. You could TRY it with BFing. Not sure if it would work, but I’m assuming it would. Or, you could latch him, let him suck some and pop him off and give him a swig of the Zantac and keep doing that. ????? Also, we kept him upright as much as possible. Usually that meant he immediately got a bib on and was sitting in his bouncy seat. We also elevated the mattress in his crib (from underneath) so that he was not laying flat. That helped A LOT. It's difficult, I know...but, it does get better. ![]() |

during the day, he is upright or semi upright all the time. He is either being held, in his swing, in his bouncy seat...something to where he is upright (I can't wait for him to hold his head up so I can use the Bumboo
)Our biggest problem is at night. He sleeps from 11-2 or 3 really well. Then after that, he has choking issues, where he is chokeing on the spit up ,and i'm scared he will asperate it. He isn't really crying or spitting. I think they called it silent reflux. It's coming up, i can hear that, just not coming out. Sometimes he cries, but he arches his back, and pulls his legs up. I wonder if i can mix the Zantac in a bottle of EBM? Dr Emma? He has been getting one bottle of EBM a day...but I could change that to 2 if I can mix it. (I'm now producing enough milk thanks to my LLL leader )Every now and then we get spit up....and it's usually really bad...last night was projectile, all over my pillow, me, my clothes, the blankets...it was gross. Today was all down my shirt, and in my hair. It seems like no matter where i put that spit cloth, it ends up on me. I forgot all about bibs maybe that will save on laundry. Last time I tried one he was too little. Today he was 7 lbs, 9 oz ![]() |
