Default Area Rug Cleaning

Hi Ladies! I promise I will post this weekend and see what everyone is up to.. I just have a quick question.. I NEED to clean my area rugs... how do I do it? Can I clean an area rug that sits on a hardwood floor with a steam cleaner or does it have to be done outside or on carpet? Or do I have to pay someone to do it (which I REALLY can't afford)
Hope all is well! I miss you guys!

Absolutely, definitely DO NOT clean them directly on your hardwood floors or it'll ruin them. The ideal location to clean an area rug (whether doing it yourself or professionally) is on your driveway. I use to work for a carpet cleaning company and that's what they did. Then you want to air dry it outside by hanging it over a fence or something like that. And make sure it's bone dry before putting em' back.

Good luck!!

Terri,

We had our carpets professionally cleaned in June, they are DISGUSTING, I think worse than what they were before we had them cleaned, is that normal?

Also, should I or should I not use an at home cleaner on the carpets? Is it better to use a cleaner like resolve or just vinegar and water?

Angie, Sorry to heist your post!!!! I hope work is going ok, you are so busy I can't get ahold of you, call me when you get a free minute.

I had a feeling it would be a bad idea to clean my living room rug this way. Glad to have that confirmed and a better way given to me before I tried it.

Haha! It's okay Trish.. give me a call this weekend.. besides the cleaning carpets thing, I am not doing anything... thank goodness! Yeah, I didn't think it would be a good idea to clean ontop of hardwood floors but I just had to verify I will be at Home Depot this weekend renting a steam cleaner

Honestly, I've never cleaned my carpets myself. I've always used the company I use to work for (Stanley Steemer). I know how their product works, they use a non-toxic (to kids & animals) and and bio-degradable (sp?) cleaner, and their equipment is truck-mounted, which means their suction/vacuum that is used to extract the water and cleaner is 10 x's more powerful than a rented cleaner. I trust them, so that's what I use.

The probable reason that your carpets seem "dirtier" than before you had them cleaned is due to the product that was used to clean the carpets ~ it's likely that they used some type of *soap* to clean they carpets, which if not extracted entirely or with a powerful enough vacuum system will leave behind a soapy residue that will attract dirt.

I hope this makes sense. I'm sure if you go to Carpet Cleaning by Stanley Steemer you'll find all sorts of helpful hints on keeping your carpets clean.
