Default Hardwood floor

So after much talking we have decided that we aren't going to have the kids share a room. This is good and bad I guess. I'll be loosing my office/storage room so we will have to get creative but I think it will be for the best.

Anyway, under the carpet in the bedrooms we have hardwood floors but they are a mess! Part of me would like to refinish them but it sounds like TONS of work and I'm not sure I could be around all the chemicals and sanding process anyway. Anyone have experience, good or bad, refinishing hardwood floors?

My dh is thinking about putting in more Pergo type flooring in the bedrooms (we have it in the rest of the house expect the bathroom) but it would cost more money than just refinishing it I think. I want to do all 3 rooms at the same time but I think we could only afford the 2 kids rooms (if that) and I'm worried about them not looking the same if we go that route.

Oh and carpet would be our very last choice. I love the softness and the warmth but it is really gross and even if you get it new it doesn't take long to start collecting stuff that can't be vacuumed out where the other floors don't have anywhere for it to go so it has to get cleaned up. And it's easy to buy rugs for a room, cheap way to redecorate and throw away when they start to get gross.

What do you girls think?

I would look at having someone refinish the wood. See how much it would cost and how long it would take to complete.

I ditto that. I'd have someone look at them and give you an estimate as to how much refinishing costs. Then compare it to how much it would cost to go an alternate route.

We have hardwoods throughout our home, and I absolutely LOVE them. And, Dh bought me a Hoover Floormate, and it makes cleaning them an absolute breeze!!! So, if you do go with ANYTHING other than carpet, get yourself a floormate, you'll LOVE it. =)

(FWIW - our bedroom and the boys' bedroom has carpeting. We love the hardwoods SO much that we are thinking of ripping it out of both rooms. It's only 2.5 years old, though. Maybe not now.... but, in the not-so-distant future.

I ditto it too... hardwood floor is nice... I'd get an estimate... I have hardwood floor throughout the house and carpet in the bedrooms... the ONLY reason I don't have hardwood in the bedrooms too is because it gets SO cold throughout the rest of the house with the hardwood floors, I guess the carpet holds in heat better... but you're right, carpet gets nasty quick..

That's a good idea, didn't even think about having someone else doing the work for us. We did some pricing out but need to do a lot more but because of labor costs it looks like it will probably will be cheaper to still do the fake wood floors over the real, how sad is that. Dh is really leaning towards the fake but I want the real so I don't know. We'll get a better idea on pricing and see.

Kris- the hoover floor mate, is that like a vacuum but for hard floors? I have a washable microfiber mop/broom thingy now that I love but Tai broke it so I'm looking for something else that's as easy.

It's a vacuum, it's a scrubber/cleaner, and it's a drier!

I can't say enough good about this thing. You can "sweep" your floors, and scrub them to death, and then dry them all up in a matter of minutes.

I've always thought my floors to be pretty clean, until I used this thing. And I was disgusted by how dirty they were! LOL! I know several moms from another group all got them around the same time... and some of us (not myself, hehehe) are the habitual daily moppers. Even THEY were disgusted by how much dirt came up the first time they used the washer!
