I saw my orthopedic surgeon this morning, and I was released from my big old boot. Of course, I had to wear it when I left there....and I can ONLY keep it off if I'm in *good* running shoes, with my orthotic arch support. So, I immediately went to Dick's Sporting Goods and bought myself a pair of New Balance runners.
I took my first steps, in shoes, right there in the store...and almost fell flat on my face. That was pretty embarrassing. But, after a few minutes, I was walking in normal fashion. I still have a bit of a limp, but it'll go away in time.
I have to have one month, strictly, on runners. No bare feet, no sandals... just the runners. After that, I'm allowed to start experimenting with sandals to see how it goes.
It's SO muggy out, already, that I'm just so relieved to have that thing OFFFFFFFFF!!!
Gary has to have the strength in his leg tested after his cast is removed to see if he can walk on it. They want the injured leg to have 30% of the strength of the good leg before he's allowed to put weight on it. He will have to have physical therapy till then. I'm going to hate the next 4 weeks as it warms up and he will be complaining more and more about how hot it gets I'm sure. He wears shorts year round - even in sub zero temps.

Yea...that makes sense! I actually have been walking (to and from the bathroom) without the boot, so it's not like I'd not been walking *at all* - however, with shoes was a totally different issue.

Gary has a walking cast too, albeit not one he can remove. He thinks he will still have at least 30% in his injured leg. But I can see him having problems. Especially after walking lopsided for 9 weeks.
