Gestational diabetes reduces breast cancer risk

Investigating the association between diabetes and breast cancer risk in Hispanic and non-Hispanic white women.

MedWire News: Women who develop gestational diabetes are less likely to develop breast cancer in later life than women with normal pregnancies, study findings suggest.

Dana Rollison (H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute, Tampa, Florida) and colleagues studied diabetes-associated breast cancer risk in Hispanic women, who have a high rate of diabetes, and non-Hispanic White women living in the USA.

In all, 1,526 non-Hispanic White and 798 Hispanic women diagnosed with breast cancer were studied and compared with a similar number of age- and ethnicity matched women who did not develop breast cancer.

The team found that diabetes overall and Type 2 diabetes were not related to breast cancer risk in non-Hispanic White or Hispanic women. But having gestational diabetes significantly decreased the risk for breast cancer in both ethnic groups, such that women with the condition were 30 percent less likely to develop breast cancer than women without gestational diabetes.

The effect was strongest among women diagnosed with gestational diabetes before the age of 45 years, for whom the risk was reduced 46 percent.

The researchers conclude: "The inverse association with gestational diabetes warrants further investigation."

Woohoo.. so not only did I lose 30 pounds but I have a lesser chance of developing breast cancer now... nice Although, it totally sucked being big and pregnant and wanting to eat EVERYTHING and not being able to eat ANYTHING

Yep - I know what you mean. I haven't read the actual study to know if their perspective of it is correct. But I sure liked what it had to say. Hopefully it's true.

I will have to tell my aunt. She had it with both boys, with her second she had to do shots. Has to be something positive, she now has testing every two years for diabetes, because she had GD twice, and now is likely to end up with it.
