Giving away FREE crotch extenders -- do I have any takers??
|
Dh has never had any kind of back problems, but it "went out" on him yesterday while I was at work. I really can't figure out what he did. He worked out Sat morning ( did sit ups and a lot of bag work), but was fine Saturday night and Sunday morning until about 9. He said he got a twinge of pain when standing in the kitchen and then it got unbearable when he was trying to lift Lauryn out of the bathtub. He called me at work and said he couldn't get up off the floor. Poor Lauryn climbed out of the tub on her own. It's excrutiating to stand or bend at the waist. I gave him Ibuprofen, Darvocet, and Flexeril plus had him on a hot pad and the pain eased up a ton. This morning he said it hurt worse than he expected and now he's in a ton of pain again (just had ibuprofen this morning). Could this all be from the work out? It just seems strange the way it came on, eased up and came on again. I know a few of you have back trouble or know someone that does. Any input?

It can take awhile for the pain from a back injury to set in. And it's completely possible that trying to lift Lauryn was the straw that broke DH's back.
Thankfully she was able to get out of the tub and nothing bad happened there. That's kind of scary. Also - heat may have been the wrong thing to put on his back. I can never remember which is which. But with a recent injury, ice might have been a better solution. Gary just hurt his back again last week when a stack of chairs he was moving at work had the brace break and a few hundred pounds fell on him. He's been using Ibuprophen and this muscle spray we have that does wonders. But he is still moving slowly. Depending on the injury - walking might help him. That's what the doctors have told DB in the past - walk, walk, walk. When he's been on the floor in agony unable to move, that's when he's had to go to the ER and get the good drugs - lots, and lots, and lots of them. Until the pain subsided to a more manageable level. But he hasn't been that bad since I've known him - thankfully. I do know he has used prescription meds a few different times for really bad back pain. But those drugs just knock him out for 12+ hours, so only uses that stuff for the worst pain. DB also has a very high pain threshold - so it's hard to compare him to others. If it's not any better today - he should probably get it looked at. When DB had his worst injury - he blew the disks on his back and instead of the small of the back curving inward, the spin curved outward. He was told he might never walk again - obviously that was wrong. (Holding 2,000 lbs by yourself does not do good things for your body.) At the time they were suggesting surgery, but he ended up seeing a chiropractor a couple times a day for about a year. Every so often we have to pop his spin back in place - it's kind of weird. But with serious back injuries, it could take weeks for it to heal. When I strained my back shoveling 7 or so years ago - it took several weeks before it was better. |

Here's Mayo Clinic's Back Problem primer. They say if it doesn't improve in 72 hours - to go see a doctor: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/back-pain/DS00171

I have major back and neck issues. For me, almost anything can set it off and without warning. One time I threw my neck out just from sneezing. Crazy, huh!?!? Infact right now I'm dealing with a stiff neck that's been hurting since last week.
They usually say to go back & forth between ice and heat. Sometimes ice can make it too stiff and more painful - my doctor told me to do what ever feels best. Sounds like he could maybe use some better muscle relaxers... I just went to the doctors today for my neck and they prescribed me something that he said is a tad stronger then Flexeril... I haven't picked it up yet, but I'll have to let you know what I got and get your input. I hope Robert feels better soon. |
