Default Cereal

I've been reading all these posts about people having troubles with their babies and foods... Brody will be 4 months in February and I'm sure that's when the Ped will give me the go ahead to feed him cereal... When did you guys start feeding cereal to your little ones? How did they react? Is it better to wait a little longer? I know I would FLIP if I saw blood and mucus in Brody's stool...

Liriel didn't get any until 5.5 months - and that's because I couldn't pump quite enough milk for daycare. It really wasn't until she was closer to 9 months that I tried feeding her much for solids at home. I would give her things to try after she turned 6 months old, but she mostly liked to play with her food - which was fine with me. And when all is said and done - she hardly ate any solids while in my care till after 12 months old. Mainly because she wasn't all that interested. Though she did eat them at daycare.

I only bought 1 box of baby cereal - and that was Oatmeal - that I dropped off at daycare. I bought a few containers of babyfood - but she wasn't much interested in that over processed stuff. So mostly I feed her the same things I ate.

AAP recommends only BM or Formula until they are 6 months old. I go with the are they interested in it and are they able to eat it method. The tongue reflex was still pretty strong for Liriel at 6 months of age - so most of the food did not go into her belly. But she did like trying different flavors.

LLL recommends mashed bananas, mashed sweet potatoes, and mashed ripe avocados as first foods. Most infant cereals have little nutritional value.

This is what I am doing this time. I wouldn't do ceral or anythign until YOU HAVE TO.!! For instance if Brody starts to wake up A LOT at night again. THen I would first try to get him to nurse a little extra before you resort to starting solids.

I think starting Bailey on solids to soon (he was 4 months) attributed to his food sensitivites. AND Oh do I regret that!!!

I skipped cereal with Josalyn after what happened to Loralei, and after my ped called baby cereal 'junk food', that sealed it. If your doc recommends solids at 4 months, ask why they are going against AAP recommendations. They have learned so much about babies, that they say 6 months now due to their bodies truely not being ready so early, their gut still isn't closed!

Here is a good read on why to delay-

I also waited till 6 months. It angers me that Dr's are telling moms to start food at 4 months when that is clearly not "gold standard". I have never understood why people are always in a hurry to feed babies something other then bm or formula.
*sorry, I'll step away from my soap box.

As long as he is okay with just BM, I will definitely wait until 6 months... Why do the docs give the go ahead at 4 months? I'm definitely not in any hurry, although he does get up twice at night and only once during the night sounds sooo good.... but my sleep is much less important than his health

I was planning on waiting to start JJ on solids until 6 months but with all his weight gain concerns I figured I would rather "supplement" him with a couple solids rather than give him any more bottles and chance him going on a nursing strike again. Anyways I agree if all is well then I'd hold out until 6 months... dealing with food sensitivities is definitely NO fun!!

The PAC at our pediatricians office wanted me to go ahead and start feeding Austin cereal around 4 months, but he also wanted me to start giving him a pacifier and discourage his night time BF so he would sleep through the night. I didn't like his advice, so I decided to go with what the AAP recommended and started Austin around 6 months on cereal and solids.
