Equal Opportunity Offender Hussy!

Noah now has permission from his ped to start solids (yay!) as of today. Since DH took him, I'm not crystal clear on what sort of menu I should implement, other than start with rice cereal first.
What sort of "menu" is recommended to start. As in, how much cereal per day? How much jar food, etc.? I know the basics, but I'm not all familiar with what a daily plan should look like... help, please!! |

There is NO reason you have to start with rice cereal. That's a "traditional' first food. But there is no nutritional reason to do so. There actually isn't much nutritional value in rice ceral.
His adjusted age is more like 3 or 4 months isn't it? I personally would wait on solids unless he appears to really want them. But that's just my opinion. La Leache League suggests: bananas, avocados, and cooked sweet potatoes as first foods - all easily mashed up by care givers. Here is a link to more info from this perspective. http://www.llli.org/NB/NBMayJun99p86.html |

Yes - most pediatricians and 1st year baby care books still recommend it. But it's completly based on what was done years past, and has nothing to do with what is best for baby. And if your DS is 100% breastfed still, I would not worry about getting enough iron in his diet right now. (Unless he is anemic and they actually tested him for that.) The iron in breast milk is MUCH, MUCH easier for him to digest than in any other food - formula included. They were just talking about this at my last LLL meeting and it's absorbed around 8x higher rate than other forms of iron. |
