Maddox ate cereal (multigrain mixed with mango and apple) and fruit yesterday and some sweet potatos and oatmeal and today he doesn't want anything to do with it. Does anyone elses babies do this? I am starting to panic because I am going back to work in a few weeks. Is it normal?

Because I said so, that's why!

He's probably just happy as can be with his BM and doesn't feel a need for anything else.
But when I put some of my food in a format she can eat she's not interested anymore. ![]() |

Amanda,
Is he picking up food by himself yet? Can he pick up things like cheerios, puffs, small cubes of bread, really soft cooked cubes of fruits or veggies, banana cubes, etc.? Is he sitting up on his own yet? When he picks up his toys is he using his thumb and index finger pretty well? We've taken the road of baby led solids. I rarely (1-2x a month) offer caleb jarred, pureed baby foods...he eats what we eat and it is just very, very recently that I have started giving him table foods. He doesn't really get much in his mouth and he makes a huge mess but it is all things that will either dissolve quickly in his mouth or small enough that if he swallows them whole he won't choke. He has just now developed the ability to pick up items (toys, food, etc.) with his index finger and thumb...and he doesn't do it consistantly. He still uses his whole palm and hand to grasp things...but I'm noticing he is doing that he does it less and less. He does get rice cereal at daycare but not because I think he needs it, just because he likes it and it get's my daycare provider to stop bugging me about him starting solids (it's a harmless compromise in my opinion.) Here is a quote from kellymom about the signs of food readiness... Signs that indicate baby is developmentally ready for solids include: Baby can sit up well without support. Baby has lost the tongue-thrust reflex and does not automatically push solids out of his mouth with his tongue. Baby is ready and willing to chew. Baby is developing a “pincer” grasp, where he picks up food or other objects between thumb and forefinger. Using the fingers and scraping the food into the palm of the hand (palmar grasp) does not substitute for pincer grasp development. Baby is eager to participate in mealtime and may try to grab food and put it in his mouth. I think it's totally normal to be where you are right now. On the weekends and days that Caleb does not go to daycare he doesn't get any baby food. Just BM and soft table foods to try. He does like the gerber teething toast and gerber puffs...but like I said, only a little gets to his mouth. He nurses well and is growing physically and developmentally just fine. I wouldn't stress about it, he'll eat when he's ready. Just keep offering safe baby table foods and let him play...that is what food is all about for the first year or so. Check out http://www.kellymom.com it has lots of excellent information. I go there all the time to find answers that my pediatrician can't give me. I love the baby led solids approach, it makes sense...expecially for the breastfed baby. Suzanne |

Amanda I agree with what Suzanne said. Kaitlyn only gets her solids once a day at daycare or my moms, at night and the weekends all she wants is BM so dont worry he is not alone. She also is not too thrilled with the puffs, if I dont break them up into little chunks she chokes on them. I have started the bitter biscuits and she does seem ok with those.

Thanks guys! I really thought we were the only ones who wanted just the boob
Suzanne I agree with your info. Maddox does it all but he doesn't really have much of a pincher. He tries to grab it all with his had then gets mad when the piece of food is lost in his chubby hand He chokes on EVERYTHING!! even cheerios that are broken Thanks again guys I really love the support |

Claire is sometimes really into her solid food and other times it's like she could care less. I've found, though, that the more she eats, the more problems she seems to have (constipation, spitting up, etc.) and recently, when she was spitting up a lot and her acid reflux was really acting up, her Dr. suggested taking her off of solid foods for a few days and then re-introducing them slowly. Since then, I've been giving her less. It seems that if she eats a whole jar of something (not sure if it's anything specific yet or not) then she had problems....so I've been offering her a few spoonfuls - half a jar. DH was always bugging me, saying "Have you given her her solid food today?" I just told him that we're cutting WAY back. I will offer her a little bit so that she gets the concept, but I decided not to stress about it. She loves her bottles, anyway.....

There is a good chance the Maddox will probably RCN. But if you can deal with the nursing at night I bet he will do just fine. Are you sending bottles of formula to daycare? He might suprise you. Caleb takes bottles of EBM from DH and my daycare provider pretty easily. He RCN's a little bit (still wakes 1-2 times a night to eat) but he also downs about 15-20oz a day at daycare in addition to me nursing at drop off, pick-up and several times before bed. How great that you can nurse him on breaks and at lunch, I would love to be able to do that! I bet he does fine, it will take an adjustment period but he will develop his own schdedule.

Thanks guys. We went to visit today He didn't even notice me and we were there for 3 hours I had a bunch of programing to do so it was a good trial period. He didn't eat until we were just about to leave (making me almost late picking up Brayden )Tonight I am going to try getting him to sleep in his bed all night. I don't think I would be able to work with all the times he has me up at night and he is big so I know he isn't really hungry. I figure if I do this before he starts going to daycare by then he should be adjusted to the routine...We will see... |
