What is the thanks button?

Its a quick and easy way to thank a user for a particularly useful post. The button is located at the bottom of their post. This replaces the need to post a thank you reply.

The amount of times you've thanked users, and have been thanked by users is shown in your post stats under your total posts. It is also found on your profile page (with links) under the statistics tab.
