Ok those of you out there help me out....I am going to be making and decorating a cake for Kaitlyns birthday. I need to make 2, one for the party this weekend with Dh's family and one for the party on the 25th with mine. Anybody have any tips or pointers for me....I am taking the wilton cake decorating classes in Sept. Right now they have a special running at Michaels during August if you prepay for the Sept classes you get all 4 cake classes for $15.00 vs Normally $30.00. Classes are Discover Cake Decorating course 1, Flowers and Borders course 2, Fondant and Tiered Cakes course 3, and Fondant and Gum paste course 4. Plus you get 30% off on any supplies you buy after signup...I will signup tommorow for the class so I can use my 30% of the supplies I need for her cake and also will use 40% coupon I have for the cake pan.

Nifty - I should see if they have that deal going on at my local store. I've been wanting to take those classes. My cake decorating skills need some major help. I would say make sure to level the cake, but I don't know that you need to do that as much with a 1 layer cake.

I've taken the Wilton classes. I LOVE cake decorating. Truthfully, the castle isn't difficult at all. It's hugely time consuming though... billions of star tips, and believe me... you don't need a class to figure out how to use that. But, the classes are FUN!!!! When Adam and I renewed our wedding vows, I made the cake. It was beautiful... shimmering off white with gum paste hearts - I'll see if I can find a pic. I know I don't have one on my computer, but I could scan one. =)

I have the big Wilton "tool box" for all my supplies. I've made several bday cakes. It really is fun and relaxing!
