What type of lens are you using for your camera? I have my lens that came with my XTi but I'm thinking about ordering from B&H Photo a 50 mm fixed/1.8 aperture.

What suggestions do you have for us "newbies"?

I also just ordered the 50mm f1.8. I also got the 430ex speedlight. I got a free diffuser I was expecting $400+ but got it for $280. Figured a good deal.

The 50mm 1.8 lens is a great lens to start out with. It has a nice wide aperature (1.8) to allow you to take shots in low light without a flash. The more expensive version is the 1.4...it's about $250 more than the 1.8. It's a little faster, better built but unless you are really into portrait photography it probably won't be big enough of a difference to matter much. The 50mm is going to be a little tight for full body shots indoors unless you have a fairly big area to back up into. If that matters alot to you, you might want to consider the 35mm 2.0. It runs right around $200 and is a little wider to use indoors. I have both the 35mm 2.0 and the 50mm 1.4...love them both!

You have the kit lens right? 18-55mm? Set that at 35mm and at 50mm to get an idea of what you will be looking at if you choose to purchase the prime lens at those focal lengths.

Why didn't I think of that?

What lens do you take most of your picuters with?? Do you have a more universal (telephoto) lens like a 70-200 or no?


I really like taking macro but I don't want only a macro lens. Is there a lens you can recommend that I can get good macro but still have some zoom, or b/c it is macro , it is macro KWIM??

I use my 50mm the most. It's sharp, fast, and stays on my camera most of the time. Occasionally I will change it out for my 35mm lens if I am inside and trying to get full body shots of the kids. I don't use my kit lens much because I can't get the aperature low enough to avoid the flash indoors and it's not nearly as sharp as the prime lenses I have. I have one zoom, 70-300mm, that I rarely use...I'm actually thinking about selling it to fund a light. The 2 zooms I want are way out of my budget right now and I don't want to spend money on something else. I'd rather save it for what I really want (that would be a 24-70 2.8L and a 70-200 2.8L with IS) They are over $1300 and $1800 respectively, which I totally can't afford until DH either graduates or gets out of school. I'm not very familier with macro lenses but from what I understand there isn't really a "substitute" for one. It either is one or it isn't. I have a couple of friends that like to shoot with macro lenses, I'll ask them for you and see what they say. There is a macro feature on your camera. Did you find that? It will allow you to be a little closer to focus in on something. Switching from autofocus to manual focus might get you a little closer as well.

Well I got a 24-70mm F2.8 DG macro lens on Monday. I love it. I can't wait to get my flash, It should be here monday...... I thought I was going to take it back but I decided not......


I took pictures with my standard lens 18-55 of my crocus's, and then I am going to take another today with the macro.

I will post went I get it done.
