Emma, that *should* work. I don't see why not. That's what the canned stuff IS anyway. Let me know how it turns out. It sounds devine! Maybe a mixed cobbler would be good? Cherries, blueberries, raspberries....YUM!

Ok, this is what we ended up using and it was FAB-U-LOUS!

INGREDIENTS:
1 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
2 cups white sugar, divided
1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
3/4 teaspoon salt
9 tablespoons cold butter 1/4 cup boiling water
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1/4 cup cold water
1 tablespoon lemon juice
4 cups fresh blackberries, rinsed and
drained
1/2 cup strawberries, rinsed, drained and quartered
1 1/2 tsp cinnamon

DIRECTIONS:
1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil.
2. In a large bowl, mix the flour, 1/2 cup sugar, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon. Cut in butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in 1/4 cup boiling water just until mixture is evenly moist.
3. In a separate bowl, dissolve the cornstarch in cold water. Mix in remaining 1 cup sugar, lemon juice, and blackberries. Transfer to a large sauce pan and bring to a boil, stirring frequently. Pour into a foil baking pan, drop dough into the pan by spoonfuls.
4. Bake 25 minutes in the preheated oven, until dough is golden brown.

this was a recipe that I modified on allrecipes.com I just happened to have strawberries that needed to be eaten so I threw them in too. I looked at all the reviews and modified based on suggestions.

So was it suppose to have 4.5 cups of blackberries and you substitued? Or did you just add the extra berries? I also assume you added the strawberries at the same time as the blackberries?

I probably had nearly 4.5 cups of berries total. Since mom doesn't believe in measuring devices I eyeballed it Guess what she gets for Christmas this year. I did add all the berries together, added the other ingredients and then cooked them.

I wanted to try Paula Deen's recipe, but mom didn't have a slow cooker big enough. Then I was gonna use Belinda's idea, but didn't have a cake mix handy at mom's. She has nothing, I swear! I even had to bring my own sugar and butter.

Honestly, when it comes to fruit in pies and cobblers, I just toss in what I've got and say good enough. I often add more because I like it that way.
