It's Bird's custard powder. I bring it back from England, but I think I've seen it here too. It's a staple in my family. I never make custard from scratch

You mix 2 Tbl of the powder with 2 tsp of sugar and a little milk taken from 1 pint of milk and make a paste. cook the remaining milk of the pint until nearly boiling then mix it with the paste you made. Return it all to the saucepan and cook until it boils and you've got custard You can do it in the microwave too, but I'm useless at that.
The "instant" stuff is nasty and not worth it. The ready made in a tin (Ambrosia brand) is like heaven on Earth I buy it on occasion for a treat (like Christmas time).
