Whey is a byproduct of milk when cheese is being made. Soy protein is just that... protein from the soy bean.
Whey is easily digestible to those not intolerant. So is soy. From the carbohydrate guide: If you’re into exercise and in particular supplementing your exercise with protein there is a long standing argument as to which protein supplement gives better results, soy of whey. Researchers at the Indiana University School of Medicine in Evansville says it appears they are equal. Researchers at the Southern Indiana campus have been experimenting for years and recently rats helped them determine whether animal protein was better or equal to vegetable protein. Experts agree that protein was important for muscle growth and muscle recovery, the next logical question is does the type of protein make a difference? The results, published in the Journal of Nutrition, took sports enthusiast by surprise, soy protein performed equivalent to whey protein. So, I think it comes down to a matter of preference... plant or animal based. I'm pretty much anti-animal based materials these days.... so my choice would be soy. Though, if one was not able to readily tolerate soy.... whey would be the way to go. |

Of course some people question the safety of large consumption of soy products.

I agree. There is a LOT of disagreement over whether or not soy is healthy.
It seems that for certain groups, it's the "perfect" food, while it's terribly damaging to other groups. There are diets out there that are recommended to person's based on their blood type. I'm wondering if this isn't one of those cases, where if you are one blood type... soy is terrific. If you are another, not so much. Personally, I LOVE soy. I am not bothered by it on the surface. If it's doing anything, adversely, to me... I'm unaware. However, 2 of my 3 children are seriously adversely affected by it. It makes them VERY sick, and in Ian's case... it's a fairly severe allergy. |
