Re: Need a great cookie recipe...
What kind of cookies do you wanna make?
How about the famous dept store recipe??? Have you made that one? Its very good.
Here is my fav cookie recipe.
PEANUT BUTTER BLOSSOMS
1 3/4 c. flour
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. peanutbutter (smooth)
1/2 c. brown sugar, packed
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 c. shortening
2 tbsp. milk
1 tsp. vanilla
1 pkg. Hershey Kisses
Mix all ingredients together except for Kisses. Shape into ball, roll in sugar.
Bake at 375 degrees 10 to 12 minutes on ungreased cookie sheet. Remove from oven. Press Kiss on cookie and let cool.
edited to add you need more sugar to roll the cookies in, the sugar in the recipe goes into the cookie. I usally roll them in the colored sugars for a prettier cookie

Re: Need a great cookie recipe...
I found the department store recipe I was talking about it is from Neiman Marcus
Ingredients
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, softened
1 cup light brown sugar
3 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 large egg
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1-3/4 cups all purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1-1/2 teaspoons instant espresso coffee powder
1-1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
Directions
1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Cream the butter with the sugars using an electric mixer on medium speed until fluffy (approximately 30 seconds)
2. Beat in the egg and the vanilla extract for another 30 seconds.
3. In a mixing bowl, sift together the dry ingredients and beat into the butter mixture at low speed for about 15 seconds. Stir in the espresso coffee powder and chocolate chips.
4. Using a 1 ounce scoop or a 2 tablespoon measure, drop cookie dough onto a greased cookie sheet about 3 inches apart. Gently press down on the dough with the back of a spoon to spread out into a 2 inch circle. Bake for about 20 minutes or until nicely browned around the edges. Bake a little longer for a crispier cookie.
Yield: 2 dozen cookies

I tried the PB Blossoms last night, and OMG. Soooooo good. Definitely a keeper (not that I thought it wouldn't be...I mean, how bad could it be? it's PB and Choc!)
Thanks again.

Re: Need a great cookie recipe...
I found this recipe last night in my binder. Dh got it from a lady at work and he said they are the best he has ever had.
Butter Cookies
1/2 lb sweet butter (no substitutes, no salted butter)
1/8 tsp salt
1 cup granulated sugar
1 egg
1 tsp baking powder
1 & 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
3 cups sifted all-purpose flour
1 Tbl cold tap water
1. Allow butter to sit out and soften on its own
2. Place in a bowl and pre-heat oven to 410 F
3. Add rest of the ingredients into the bowl containing the butter
4. with a large wooden spoon, hand mix (do not use a hand mixer or food processor)
5. When your wrist begins to ache from mixing, DO NOT ADD MORE WATER. To mix properly, your wrist and fingers will get tired
6. This can now go into a cookie press or roll out and cut and decorated with jimmies and cookie decorations.
7. Bake in pre-heated 410 degree oven, checking frequently to make certain that the cookies DO NOT BEGIN TO BROWN
8. you may open the door to check on the cookies as often as you desire.
9. The second they get the slightest bit golden, remove from the oven and with spatula or butter knife remove from the cookie sheet and place on plates to cool.
I wish I could remember about how long they cook, but I don't think it was very long at all.
