Default Fenugreek and Blessed Thistle

I am trying to combat a decrease in milk supply BEFORE I get so low I have to stop. I have been taking fenugreek but Belinda was telling me that taking blessed thistle also helps.

Does the combo REALLY HELP? I am skeptical of everything, sorry. Also how much blessed thistle do I take with the fenugreek. I am not good at kelly mom and can't seem to find it.

Thanks for the help.

It is suppose to work better if you take them together. I took them for awhile, but they made both me and Liriel really gassy so I stopped using it.

The best thing for upping milk supply is to let Tierney nurse, nurse, nurse, and nurse. If you can curl up in bed and just let her nurse as long as she is willing and you can encourage her to do so, that will help the most. Though with 2 others running around the house.....

Quote:
Blessed Thistle (Cnicus Benedictus)
Suggested dosage:
capsules
up to 4 capsules, 3 times a day
tincture
up to 20 drops of tincture, 2-4 times daily
tea
Pour one cup of boiling water over 1.5 to 2 grams of crushed Blessed Thistle and steep for 10 to 15 minutes. Drink 1 cup 2-3 times per day.
German Commission E monograph recommends 4–6 grams of blessed thistle per day.
Side effects:

* Anyone with allergies to plants in the daisy family should use blessed thistle cautiously.
* Reported to be an effective emmenagogue. The American Herbal Products Association Botanical Safety Index and the German Commission E indicate that blessed thistle is not to be used during pregnancy.
* Cathartic (laxative effect) and emetic (causes vomiting) in large doses (more than 5 grams per dose).

Blessed thistle is one of the more commonly used galactagogues. Can be taken in combination with red raspberry, alfalfa, marshmallow, and fenugreek.

Hale notes that blessed thistle is "virtually nontoxic, with only occasional suggestions that high doses may indice GI symptoms." Lactation Risk Category is L3 (moderately safe). He does not warn against use during pregnancy.

German - Bitter distal or Benedikten Kraut
Latin - Cnicus Benedictus

I have been trying to get her to nurse but she is really BITING when she is not interested. I have been pumping extra after each feeding, I got 3 EXTRA oz out this morning. She is also ONLY nursing 3-5 times a day. IT doesn't seem like enough to me.

Well she is 9 months old - some kids only nurse that much. (Not mine - but other people's kids. ) 3X a day is a bit low - but 5x a day is probably OK for the age (unless she isn't eating anything else) . How much is she eating for solids? I know at that age Liriel started biting me more and she was a distracted eater. Some times I had to go into a room just the two of us to get her to nurse. But I do recommend putting her down if she bites you and tell her that hurts. Also check her latch and make sure it's good. If she bites when she's not hungry, then it's probably wise not to nurse.

The big question is: is she producing appropriate amounts of wet/dry diapers? is he healthy? Is she happy? If those are all true, don't worry about it. When she wants to nurse more she will let you know. Just keep offering. When she decides your supply is to low, she will most likely nurse like crazy to get it back up.

I found the 9-10 months a PITA time to nurse, because Liriel was so interested in everything but nursing. LOL She did a LOT of popping on and off.

Some people talk about how their child self weaned around this age, but more likely it was a distracted child and Mom not pushing the nursing as much as the child needed.

Pumping after she nurses is a good way to keep your supply up.

Could she be teething? I think biting is sometimes related to that.

Based on what you've indicated, I would just make sure you offer to nurse her before you feed her any solids. As the BM is better for her than the solids. Then if she is still hungry she will eat the solids. That's pretty much what I did with Liriel till she was at least 12 months old. The only reason I stressed about output when Liriel was that age was because I was pumping while at work and was having trouble getting anything out. I'm envious of the 3 ozs you got after nursing actually.

At tierney's 9 month appt the Dr ACTED like she wasn't eating enough. She is in the 25 percentile. Sometimes in the evening she is still hungry after solids and BM so I pull out 4-5 oz and she drinks that. She has PLENTY of wet diapers and poops at least once if not 2xs a day. I will change to feeding her first and then giving her solids. She is eating 2-3 solid meals a day and I just started to offer her more table food. You would think after #3 I would get it. I know I have more milk now than I did with Bailey at 9 months, so I am very happy about that!!

Has she been in the 25% all along or is she dropping? And if she is dropping, is it for more than one appointment? Liriel was in the 25% for height till after her 12 month WBC. Though she was in the 50-75% for weight. Then she started growing. She pretty much grew like I did. So if you can find out how you grew that might make you feel better if it was similar.

Is she easily distracted? Has she started moving around on her own?

The problem with BTDT is that each kid is different. So kid #3 might do things different than #1 or #2. She is a girl after all and has a right to do things differently than her brothers.

I think you're doing great. I never used these 2 herbs together, I only used the fenugreek. I don't think I would worry about the percentile unless she dropped significantly. Lauryn has been 5-15% most of the time in weight.
