Interesting article....my hospital was very pro breastfeeding and especially with Kate being in the NICU they did everything possible to remind me that breast was best even waking me up in the middle of the night to make sure I hadnt gone too long between pumpings so my milk would come in. My family and Ed's(except for Ed himself) did not support me at ALL....they actually tried to discourage me from BF, my boss was my only person who encouraged me, she bf both of her sons to 27+ months. Obviously I didnt let there negativity stop me since we made it to 31 months...sometimes I wish I wouldnt have weaned her and just let her wean herself, but knowing my kid I would be still nursing her at age 16.

My Hospital was mostly pro-BFing. I "think" that is becoming more and more true of the upper midwest. But when I asked about Liriel not nursing for over 6 hours the nurse on duty said "That's normal for newborns." I was thinking then and I'm sure now that that is NOT normal. Unless babies from mothers drugged during delivery act that way - I know the first couple hours after birth said child might not be interested - but 6+ hours later???? But I had no pain meds. The article was specific to England in regards to policy and how things currently (as of 2006) are. Though they did mention the US many times. I thought it was interesting that formula companies are not suppose to do direct advertising to mothers - but they obviously do in the US.

My mother nursed 5 out of 7 children for about 1 year and the youngest - who was 3 months early was nursed for 2 years. It was only my oldest brother who didn't get nursed very long - a month or so at most - because the doctor told her she couldn't make enough milk. She knew better with child #2. But my mother had no support from her mother who wondered WHY she would BF when formula was so much more convenient?? Which makes me assume my mother was formula fed. My sister still nurses her 4-year-old to sleep at night. Though I think that is the only session he gets these days. But DB didn't think I would be able to nurse, so that kind of surprised him. But once he realized how effective it was in calming her down and shutting her up he was all for it. So while family does wonder why my sister and I are STILL nursing, they really don't say much about it.

Around her 3rd birthday, Liriel started sleeping better at night - even through the night some times (THANK YOU GOD!!!!!!!! ). So I often only nurse 2x a day now days. She will even go back to sleep at night without nursing, though not always. And if she sleeps in in the morning, she may only get a 5 min hit (vs. 30+ min nursing session) before we have to leave for school/work. But on weekend when I'm with her all day she likes to make up for the nursing shortages during the week. I don't think she is going to wean anytime soon, but then, she might surprise me and just decide one day she doesn't need it anymore. Kind of like how she kicked me out of school the last 2 mornings.
