Austin's mommy

with breastfeeding. Especially after our episode yesterday. Austin, Michael, and I along with my sister went to Greenville, SC yesterday to meet with our cousins to do a new grandchildren (and now great grandchildren) picture for our grandmother for her birthday coming up. Well, besides the fact that Austin didn't nap on the way down (it's an 1 1/2 hour trip) like I had hoped and on top of the fact he's teething again, needless to say he pitched a fit while we were trying to get pictures made. What made it worse as he was pitching those fits was him yelling "bobby" (which is his word for boobie) at the top of his lungs. I took him to the bathroom a few times for him to nurse quickly, but that wasn't enough. I was so frustrated with him by the time we left. That made up my mind I was ready to be done. I've just got to go about finding a way to start weaning him. Any suggestions on how to make this process an easy one?

Don't do what Lisa did. Cold Turkey - bad for baby, worse for Mom. That would be my first suggestion.
![]() If you really want to start weaning, I would start by dropping feedings one at a time. Probably leaving the just before bed/nap for the last ones - unless he falls asleep on his own without those already. When he is OK with not getting that feeding, drop another. Also do the "Don't ask, Don't offer" routine. If he doesn't ask to nurse, don't offer it to him. Some times at night - say 4 am when mine wants to power nurse STILL - I will tell her "CCs (our name for nursing - thank goodness we have one most people don't understand when she starts screaming for it in public. ) are going night, night and she needs to go night, night and Mommy needs to go night, night too." Often repeated several times. I start before she gets done nursing on a side, so she has warning. This has helped. Because if she has no warning she is more likely to have an hour plus long screaming/kicking fit. Though not so much anymore. |

The only thing that worked with kate was to put bandaids on my nips and tell her they were owie....she still asks me if they are owie and when I say yes she says ok and walks off.....I am shocked how easy it really was...I guess she was just ready. Hope it is that easy for you.

I had a couple days of porn star boobs but then it wasnt an issue.....i used ice and some showers and it got alot better. I would have liked to just wean one nursing session at a time but since she was really only nursing before bed and in the am I really couldnt do that...cold turkey was the only way to go.
Plus how would i tell her they were ouchie and night but ok in the am....just wouldnt work |

If at all possible, I agree with the girls. Slowly drop one session, or shorten the session. If you have to, you could tell him it's an owie and pump off just a little to relieve.
Really there isn't any right answer. Hopefully, it's as painless and stressfree as possible for you. If you feel like crying, we're here for you! I know I DID! ![]() |

Thanks for all the advice girls. Fortunately, it's only one side I have to worry about. My left nip was never as protruding as much as the right, so he would get frustrated trying to nurse from it. We've pretty much always nursed just from the right side. There might be a tad bit of milk in the left, but fortunately never really any problems stopping that side altogether. Sometimes I would tell him the boobies were broke and not working, and he'd start screaming and crying even louder. It was a comical sight. I've pretty much only been nursing when he asked for it for a while. Only problem is when he's home with me all day, he wants them all day. Especially since we're going through more teething. It's been pretty much in the morning and at night. He had been nursing when we got home in the afternoons, but I've been trying to cut that out. I've even tried the vinegar or lemon juice on the nips, but he'd just make a funny face and keep on nursing.
Lisa, I like your bandaid idea. I'll have to try that. |
