I went to my LLL leader yesterday, so she could see if it was thrush, or a latch issue. It was a latch issue. She said he was "slurping" my nipple into his mouth, and it's causing the blood to stop flowing, and then when he's done, the blood rushes back, and that's why it throbs. She said he dosne't open his mouth wide enough, and the binkey we use (a NUK) is flat, and he dosen't have to wrap his tounge around it like a longer binkey...i baught the ones she was tlaking about, and he jsut screams, he HATES it. My nipple hurts sooo badly, and i'm getting engourged from him not getting enough milk out. I don't know why this is happeneing all of a sudden, but i'm ready to give up and go to formula There is a blister on the tip of my nipple from him not latching right, and even when I think he's latched properly, he pulls back, and gets to the tip again. She asked if he was always so fidgity when he nurses, and I said yes. I just don't know what to do...i'm feeling sooo discourange.....

Tierney STILL sucks in my nipple.OMG does that hurt. I think the thing that helped me was:

When you are flattening like a sandwich, put more pressure on one side (The side toward the top of his mouth) This way your nipple is POINTING towards the top of his mouth.

Don't get discouraged. Formula is TOO EXPENSIVE. let alone the health benefits you will LOSE. Hang in there.

Keep relatching until he gets it right and don't let him have the pacifiers that are messing up his latch. You can pump in the mean time to keep you supply up. See if you can give him EBM from a cup or some thing to avoid getting him too use to a bottle. Since the bottle will encourage bad latch.

I know it isn't fun.. Brody used to and still sometimes sucks on it like it is a straw instead of putting his whole mouth around it.. I agree with the girls, formula is really expensive and in the mean time, just pump to keep your supply up... I hope it gets better soon

Don't give up yet Jess. Addie used to suck in my nipple like spaghetti all the time. I just kept making her relatch and I'd help her open her mouth. She's a pro now. It's a pain (pun intended), but totally worth the effort. I'll tell you that there were many times I almost gave up. But here I am at 11 months and still nursing Addie.
