The banks mostly give the milk to hospitals for babies in NICU. Most often preemies, but also other sick babies whose mothers can't - or won't - breastfeed. That's how important breast milk is - even after they process donated milk for contaminates, the babies do better on it than formula. You don't get compensated for donating to a milk bank. Unless they give you supplies to package the milk in it. They test you for all kinds of diseases and do a health history before they will except your milk. But if you are a heavy producer, it's a great way to rotate your freezer stash. In return you can know that you are helping a sick child. Though some people can buy from milk banks for adopted children, most of it goes to hospitals or to babies that were in the hospital.
