It's official, I'm a post whore!!

The Doctor said that sometimes breastfed babies don't poop for up to a week. Last week he didn't go for 5 days, and this week it has been 7 days and still nothing.. It really started to effect him today because he is a REALLY good baby and hardly ever cries but today, everytime I put him down he starts to cry. And I know he's not hungry and doesn't need to be changed. Someone told me to try to stimulate him by taking his temp and that didn't work. Btw, his temp was 99.2 ... anyway.. When should I call the Doctor and what would they be able to do for him? And do you think that is the reason he is crying? I would cry too if it had been that long! Poor baby..

Because I said so, that's why!

MOST 100% BF babies poop several times a day. A few space it out a few days. Several days between poops is much more normal with formula feed babies. But even then 7 days is a LONG time for a baby that young to go without pooping. It could be normal - but I would call the doctor now. Especially if he's running a low grade fever.

I just left a message for the Doctor. I am also on the phone with Tricia right now and she said that Gage would sometimes go for 7-8 days without pooping and that her ped told her it was normal.. but I just don't like the fact that he is crying everytime I put him down.. he has never been like this.

I just spoke about this with Jayden's GI today and this is what he said...
Rectal temperatures usually run about a half a degree warmer than axillary or oral. I'm pretty sure he said 99.5 was average but anything under 100.2 would be considered normal and anything above 100.4 is a fever. The fussiness is probably due to him being uncomfortable and yes it is not unusual for BF babies to go up to 10 days inbetween BM's. It is ok to give him an infant suppository, but he said to only do it every other day and for no more than a couple times or you can try a little bit of juice. As long as his urine output is good and he is gaining weight normally the poop issue shouldn't be a problem. How's things tonight? |

The Doctor's office called me back and asked me to bring him in at 6:30.. DH got home at 6:00 and right before we headed out the door, DH said "What's that smell?" and my goodness! Was there a BIG surprise waiting for us in Brody's diaper
lol.. So we called and cancelled the appointment.. but they did reassure me that it is normal for him to sometimes not poop for a week... I also think taking his rectal temp helped out.. Tricia told me that it would take an hour or two to work on her boys and it took about an hour and a half to work for Brody.. I just hope this doesn't only happen just once a week because is that really normal? They said it is "sometimes" normal.. I guess I will just have to track it and let them know |

I love my boys!!

we had an issue with Mike when he was little, and my cousin is a nurse up north, and she told me to put a little bit of bar soap (dove or ivory or something) on the tip of the rectal thermometer to help stimulate a BM. I did it for Mike, and it worked....just an added thaught....
