I had pink eye last weekend and the doc prescribed me eye drops (Sulfacetamide Sodium Ophthalmic Solution USP, 10%). I've been pumping and dumping (which breaks my heart) because I had read that sulfa drugs were dangerous for infants, but, when is it safe to feed Austin my EBM again? I used the drops up through this afternoon. Would it be safe to start feeding him tomorrow? If not, how long should I wait?
Giving away FREE crotch extenders -- do I have any takers??
Sulfonamides are considered compatible with breastfeeding according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. When taken orally they are excreted in low concentrations in the breast milk and you were using it topically (so in theory even lower concentrations would be found in the breast milk). Sulfacetamide is a derivative of sulfa. and is actually used in infants to treat eye infections at the same dosage as adults (>2 months of age). I would resume bfing.
