Is this a growth spurt? He has been eating every 1-2 hrs all day, and basically non stop since 3:30 this afternoon (after about a 2 hr nap) He has been up since 3:30, just wanting to nurse. I just finally offered him some formula, and he barley took any (maybe 4 swallows) i just gave him to DH, and he's seems ok, but it's been like non stop....Is it because there is no shield?

It could very well be a growth spurt. Without the shield he might also be getting more milk out and find it a fascinating thing. But if it's a growth spurt, you need to let him nurse so he can up your supply, otherwise you'll never get your supply up to the level he needs. It will probably last a couple days.
