Sorry for the long wait girls - the hospital didn't have any kind of internet access (stupid hospital!!
) and it's been VERY busy since we got home earlier Basics: Macy Elizabeth Born 11/12/06 at 11:30am 8 lbs 15 oz, 21" long via VBAC #2! 12 hour labor 13 minutes of pushing! Long story: At my appointment on Friday, I was 2 cm dilated (but could be stretched to a 3) but only 25% effaced. Cervix was still high and posterior. The midwife stripped my membranes. I had a lot of cramping and contractions on and off for the rest of the day. Saturday I was very busy, cleaned the house, ran some errands, and finally after dinner DH and I went walking at the mall for 1 1/2 hours, hoping to get things moving. Didn't notice any patterned contractions, just general cramping and pressure and some sporadic intense BH. I decided to take 2 oz of castor oil and head to bed. I took the same amount with Parker at 9pm and my water broke at 6am the next morning and he was born by 2:30pm. I was hoping for a similar experience, but of course Macy had to make my plan her own! I was awoken 2 hours later to use the bathroom (of course!) and when I laid back down in bed I started having intense contractions. I tossed and turned for a bit but couldn't get comfortable, so decided to go take a bath and see what happened. I checked the clock first and it was 11:11 (so I made a wish that this would be IT hehe!). By the time I got out of the tub, around 11:30, the contractions had settled into a good pattern, coming every 2 to 3 minutes, and pretty intense (not horribly painful though.) I walked around, repacked my hospital bag, bounced on the birthing ball, just tried to stay comfortable and keep moving. I woke DH up about 12:30 to tell him it might be the real deal. I was getting pretty uncomfortable and was already completely exhausted. I tried to lie down a few times but it was just too uncomfortable. I took a couple more baths, and the warm water just intensified the contractions. I had no clue when to call the hospital though. Since I was induced with Cade and with Parker my water broke right away, I'd never been in that "when do I call?" situation. I debated about it with DH for 2 hours lol before finally deciding to call. The contractions were getting strong enough that I was moaning through them, were still 2 minutes apart, and it was hard finding a comfortable position. Some were hard to talk through. So although I'd wanted to stay home as long as possible, I was also exhausted and wanted to know if this was real or not. The midwife said to come on in and get checked out. We called MIL and she was over 30 minutes later, at which point I was getting annoyed that she was taking so long, as the contractions were getting more intense. We finally left around 3:15am and got to the hospital and into our room around 4am. The nurse checked me and I was only 3 1/2 cm dilated and 50% effaced, cervix still high and posterior. She had us walk around for 1 1/2 hours to see if I progressed at all. When I was walking around I noticed the contractions decrease in strength and frequency. Strangely, when I sat down they got stronger and more frequent (maybe because of how her head was positioned in there?) so I stayed sitting down. When the nurse checked me again around 5:30am I was only 4 cm dilated, stretchable to a 5, and still 50% effaced. She still wasn't sure if she wanted to admit me or not. She talked to the MW on the phone and they decided not to admit me yet, because apparently this hospital has a strict policy with VBACs that you have to have constant fetal monitoring (which is not what the OB said when I met with him to "sign off" on my VBAC So we kept walking, bouncing on the ball, sitting around waiting and hoping for things to pick up. The MW came in at 8am and checked me - I was finally 6cm dilated, but that damn cervix was still only 50% effaced, high and posterior!! Ahhhh!! Back to bouncing on the ball, and the contractions were stronger and painful, but still manageable. I was sure it was because my water hadn't broken yet - with Parker my contractions were unbearable from 2 cm onward lol, simply because my water broke and his head was just right there. So at that point I was thinking maybe I could manage without the epidural. Of course I was also completely exhausted and dozing off in between contractions. At 9:15am she checked again and now I was 7 cm - but still 50% effaced and high and posterior!!! She asked if I wanted her to break my water, thinking baby's head would pressure the cervix enough to bring it down. I said YES!! but warned them I'd probably want an epidural in oh, about 5 minutes lol! She broke my water, clear and tons of it, and the contractions immediately got horrible. I went from strong but manageable contractions to smack in the middle of transition and I was not happy lol! As the nurse was putting in my IV (and blowing a vein on my hand after digging around for a few minutes - like I wasn't hurting enough! I dozed in and out for a little bit until the MW came in to check on me at 11:10am - I wasn't feeling any pressure down there yet that would've indicated baby was descending, but she checked my cervix anyways. We were all very surprised to find me 10 cm, 100% effaced, and Macy only an inch or two from crowning! Only 4 contractions and 13 minutes later, Macy was born at 11:30am! It felt so incredible this time! With Parker I'd had the epi turned off for the entire 1 1/2 hours I pushed but I didn't feel much when he came out. This time although I had no pain down there, I felt her body rushing down the canal and out - it was just amazing! She started crying her little mewling cry lol, like her party had just been ruined. I think she had planned on staying in there for quite a bit longer! She had her hand up by her face when she came out (just like I worried she would since she always had her hand on her face in the ultrasounds!) and her shoulders hadn't been rotated in the right position. Still, the midwife and a resident were down there stretching and massaging like crazy to avoid a huge tear or episiotomy and they did a great job - I only got one small tear on the previous episiotomy scar, and a tiny skidmark up near the top. Just a little tenderness today, but nothing compared to the pain I was in after Parker. We were discharged earlier today with no problems. We couldn't believe how big she was!!!!! They didn't weight her until 1 1/2 hours after she was born, so she probably would've weighed in at 9 lbs or more if they'd checked right away. She doesn't look that big - although she does have some mega chunky cheeks! We are so thrilled! It's so strange to have a daughter - I keep saying things like "Oh I should feed him" and have to correct myself. It's so wonderful finally having her here!!!! Thanks girls
The boys are being great with her - Parker is very intrigued but doesn't quite get it lol. Cade is in love He loves to sit next to me while I'm holding her and lay against her, cuddling. Definitely going to be a protective big brother - at least until she starts playing with his toys |
